Nobody tells you that the fourth trimester is mostly about you. The baby is doing what babies do. You are the one healing from a birth, feeding every two hours, learning a person's cues from scratch, and meeting a version of yourself you have not met before, all on no sleep. The lines below are for that version of you.
For the nights
- •We are both brand new at this. We are allowed to learn each other slowly.
- •I do not have to solve anything right now. I only have to get to morning.
- •This feed, this hour, this night: it is a season, not forever.
- •Every mother awake right now is awake with me.
- •I can hand the baby over and sleep. Rest is also care.
For the body
- •My body did something extraordinary. It gets to be soft while it heals.
- •Healing is not a race I am losing. It is happening right now.
- •The mirror is not the measure of what I carried.
- •I feed my baby in the way that keeps us both well. That is the right way.
- •This body is the place my child feels safest. That is not nothing.
For the shift in who you are
- •I am already a mother. The caring started long before the meeting.
- •I can love this baby and miss my old life in the same breath.
- •Not knowing what to do is not the same as doing it wrong.
- •I will ask the question even if it feels silly. My peace of mind matters too.
- •I was a whole person before them, and I still am.
A note on the baby blues and beyond
Tearfulness and mood swings in the first two weeks are common and usually pass. If low mood, anxiety, or a feeling of being disconnected from the baby lasts longer than that, or you have thoughts of harming yourself or the baby, please talk to your midwife, doctor or a postpartum support line. Affirmations are for ordinary hard days. They are not a treatment, and asking for help is the strongest line on this page.
Where Confident Mom fits
Reading anything at 3 a.m. with one hand is the test. One short line, pushed to the lock screen at the hour you chose, passes it.
Confident Mom is a daily affirmations app written only for mothers. You tell it how many children you have and how old they are, what weighs on you most, and when you want to hear from it. It then sends a few lines a day, one affirmation per notification, chosen for your season, and it keeps a two-minute practice and an "I need a minute" breathing break ready for the hard moments. It is free to start on iOS and Android.
